Dream of Blogging your way to Hollywood? Tips from former sex worker/ Oscar nominee "Juno" writer Diablo Cody .

"One of my teachers told me that I was lazy," Cody explained. "He said, 'I think you're the best writer I've ever taught. But I'll never hear from you again because you have no ambition.' I never intended to get my writing out there. I always thought of published writers as honor roll students -- the real overachiever types. I never intended my work as a springboard to anything else. I write because I'm addicted to it. It's my confessional."
-Brooke "Diablo" Cody.

Diablo Cody was "discovered" when a successful Los Angeles literary manager (Mason Novick) found Cody's blog Pussy Ranch (that's the original blog -- the "newer" home on blogspot is here).while surfing the net for porn, and inquired from 3,000 miles away about her literary ambitions. I don't know about you guys, but I am getting crackin' right away.

Diablo on Myspace.

See Diablo on Letterman (from January 22, 2008):

From Diablo's appearance on Oprah (click on Oprah to see interview):

The witty dialogue in Juno was written by first-time screenwriter Diablo Cody. Just six months before this talented writer sat down to write the film, Diablo says she was working as a stripper in Minnesota. "It's a bad idea because it's very cold there. You have to wear a lot of layers," Diablo jokes. "I don't recommend it. Writing movies is way better."

Although she says it wasn't her intention, stripping inspired Diablo to write a memoir about her experience. Soon enough, she was contacted by a producer. "He had read some of my writing on the Internet, and he said, 'I think you're funny, you're kind of cool, you should try writing a screenplay,'" she says. Without formal training, Diablo wrote Juno in just a couple months. "I felt like I had the skeleton of something that could be special," she says. "But then it takes amazing actors like these [Ellen Page and Jennifer Garner] to come in."

This girl rocks!

High Mercury Levels Are Found in Tuna Sushi

Tony Cenicola/The New York Times

Tests on sushi bought in Manhattan revealed mercury levels that exceed accepted safety.

Recent laboratory tests found so much mercury in tuna sushi from 20 Manhattan stores and restaurants that at most of them, a regular diet of six pieces a week would exceed the levels considered acceptable by the Environmental Protection Agency.

VOTD: Gym Membership

When Won’t Your Monthly Gym Membership Result in Weight Loss?

You might have joined a gym like so many other Americans do in January in hopes of realizing their weight loss goals. Fitness facilities usually enjoy an increase in membership following the New Year. It’s a great time to join a gym. Consumers are highly motivated to fulfill their New Year’s resolution for weight loss, and the winter weather usually makes outdoor exercise difficult. If your one of the countless Americans who joined a gym to achieve weight loss, you will find the following tips helpful in enabling you to meet those goals.

Losing Weight or Losing Money?

Your gym membership is pointless if you never go to the gym. Unfortunately, that is what happens to so many Americans who started out the year with high hopes. They go almost religiously in January and part of February. Then their gym attendance drops off. They continue to pay their monthly gym membership to avoid the cancellation fee or because they sincerely hope doing so will get them motivated to go back to the gym. A gym membership only helps you achieve weight loss if you actually go to the gym.

Plan a Schedule

Determine how often you want to go to the gym. If you want to go four days at minimum, then look at your schedule to see where it would be convenient. Do you usually take a long lunch on Thursday to run errands? Perhaps, you can do some of your shopping online and go to the gym instead. Many gyms have long hours to accommodate busy lifestyles. If you planned to go to the gym on Monday but were too busy all day, then go at 9 o’clock at night. It’s usually not a good idea to exercise to close to bedtime, but if that is the only time you can squeeze in then go for it. If you get to the gym as often as you promised yourself you would, weight loss should soon follow.

D.I.Y. Guru - Read from the Huffington Post

Maybe gurus aren't so much masters we can imitate but examples we can look to for inspiration. So it's time to fire our gurus (facts, truths, religious persuasions, principles, dogmas) so the guru in ourselves can emerge. The greatest compliment we can pay our gurus, coaches and therapists is to make clear that we no longer need them.

Voila! "Better Than Chicken Soup"

Voila! "Better Than Chicken Soup"
Originally uploaded by .edward

Got the recipe for this immune-boosting soup from Whole Foods!

The recipe below is of this soup which promises to be as immune boosting as it is delicious. The other featured recipes also include healthful traditional Japanese ingredients like miso, ginger and garlic. The soups are very different than a bowl of steaming Jewish penicillin but likewise boast of contributing to centuries of good health.

Better Than Chicken Soup

Every ingredient here is included for its nutritional benefit. Serves 4 to 6.

1 small yellow onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, sliced
1 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
1 tsp. ground turmeric
4-8 fresh shitake mushrooms, sliced
4 cups mushroom, vegetable or chicken broth
1-1/2 cups julienned fresh kale (cut as thin as possible)
1 cup butternut squash, cut into cubes
2 Tbsps. grated fresh ginger
1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper (optional)
5-6 thin slices astragalus root (optional)
Juice of 1 fresh lemon
1 tsp. miso paste

In a saucepot over medium high heat, sauté onion and garlic in oil for three minutes. Add turmeric and mushrooms. Sauté 2 minutes. Add broth, kale, squash, ginger, cayenne and astralagus. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover and simmer 15 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly, add lemon juice and miso (adding miso when still very hot will diminish its probiotic benefits). Cover and let sit 5 minutes before serving.

On January 6th, Bill Gates gave his final Microsoft keynote at the 2008 CES show in Las Vegas. Throughout the keynote he made many references to what he will do with his free time once he retires from day to day operations at Microsoft.

It turns out, Bill has big plans in addition to his foundation after all.

Gratitude moment: however small

This being awesome Monday, i want to continue the gratitude momentum by saying that I am grateful for having a laundry mat downstairs where i live...easy access to quarters for the parking meter!

Monday is awesome day!

So appreciative that we went to yoga this morning..Our first class since getting the flu last month...and falling into the habit of missing class due to other reasons--no, excuses.

It was easy to get up, get ready and get to class...why? Because we didn't 'overthink', rather it was just being in the moment of action and focusing on the goal of practicing yoga today. And it was so worth it...

Now we can indulge in a pain au chocolate and a soy latte and be thankful....

Yes, I'll admit that I haven't been following the publicity leading up to the movie release of Cloverfield on Jan. 18, 2008.

But I saw the preview and I am blown away!!

Pleasantly surprised....

We're not huge fans of "chick flicks" and observing all the previews they were playing before the start of the Juno (chick flick after chick flick), we thought this one might be one too.

We were wrong!! The movie turned out to be funny, twisted, witty and above all, a great way to escape your everyday life....isn't that what going to the movies are all about??!!

Ellen Page deserves an Oscar nomination!!
